The weather in Scotland has gradually been getting a little warmer (and sunnier), so we decided to get away for a weekend and head to the mountains! It's still only around 50 degrees, but when you've been in freezing weather and rain for the last several months, it feels like a warm day! It's funny though, because back home that would still be a chilly winter day to us Texans.:)
But, as luck would have it, the very morning we started to pack up the car it started snowing!!! It hadn't snowed or been that cold for weeks! We went ahead with our plans, and figured it would stop soon. The weather in Scotland can be very unpredictable with snow one minute and sunshine the next. However, as we got further up into the mountains, the snow got heavier. Pretty soon we were in a complete snow storm! The driving conditions were not the best, so I was very tempted to tell Howard to turn the car around. He assured me it was fine, but as soon as he said that we were up on a mountain (by the ski slopes) and sliding all over the place! There was nothing protecting us from sliding right off that mountain! Talk about panic. We made it out alive and eventually to the resort, but learned to better prepare for our trip and this ridiculously crazy weather!
We stayed at the Hilton in Aviemore, which was very nice because it had a Fun House for the kids next door, an indoor swimming pool, restaurants, and a creche for the kids if the adults wanted a couple hours to themselves. Creche is another name for daycare, and you can find them everywhere here! You can put your kids in the creche at Azda (walmart) if you need to while you shop. Or other places like the community centers, country clubs, etc while you do what you need to do. It's funny to me that Scotland is much more kid friendly place than the US. There are more activites and they're less expensive. That's been one of my favorite things about living here. But of course, they are some downfalls also.
Anyway, when we got there we went straight to the restaurant to eat, and then over to the Fun House to play. The girls had a great time, but Avery really wanted to play in the snow so we let her for just a little bit since we really weren't dressed for that. We spent the rest of the day swimming and hanging out. By morning, there was several feet of snow, so everyone was outside shoveling their cars out of it so they could drive home. Thankfully, the roads were cleared, but we still took another way home. We drove by Loch Ness ( home of the mythological creature) so that was cool. It wasn't the spring get away we were hoping for, but we still had a great time! We look forward to going back in the summer and traveling to other places. Our next stop....PARIS!!!
